Department of Commerce : Morigaon College

Introduction

The Department of Commerce is a leading and the pioneer centre of commerce education in the entire Morigaon district. The department today flourishes and continues with 280 no.s of students pursuing B.Com course along with 05 no.s of faculties. Established with the core objective of imparting Business-Education, the department has till now successfully produced   08 outgoing batches. The department not only covers commerce courses but also caters to the needs of students of other disciplines by offering certificate courses in Accounting, Finance, Marketing  and Entrepreneurship development programme (EDP)etc.

From time to time, Department of Commerce has conducted various Entrepreneurship Development Programmes(EDP), Entrepreneurs’ Skill Development Programmes (E-SDP), Webinars and Workshops on Financial Education and Investors' Awareness to motivate students and teachers and help in their career development. History

The department was established on 1st Aug.2012 with two specializations (Accountancy & Management) under the affiliation of Gauhati University. At the time of its establishment, there were 04 faculties and 81 no.s  of students. Since its commencement, the following teachers have served as faculty in the department of Commerce:

Resources of the Department

The Department of Commerce has four full fledge ground floor room out of which three rooms are allocated as classrooms and one room is allotted as a staff room. One computer set with an Internet connection. two steel Almirah, one fully locked book selves and two tables with six chairs.

  • Lack of adequate books in departmental libraries.
  • No. smart classroom for Advance learning.
  • Shortage of faculties.
  • Lack of alumni cooperation.
  • Poor Internet Connectivity.

 

Opportunities

  • Only one degree College having Commerce in Morigaon Town.
  • As the only commerce institute, it promotes entrepreneurial development by providing commercial education and can provide avenues for self-dependence.

Challenges

  • Frequent changes of faculties. 
  • There is a lack of funds for various departmental activities.
  • Increase in the number of students but lack of adequate well-equipped classrooms

  • Students participated in the Entrepreneurship Development Course, Sponsored by NSDC.
  • Students & faculties visited The JUNBIL MELA to watch & take part in the barter system with students.
  • Students visited The SEBI LHO , GUWAHATI to participate in the FINANCIAL AWARENESS workshop regularly.
  • Students visited The SRD GROUP, MONGOLDOI under Industrial Visit.
  • AWARENESS  PROGRAMME during initial phase of COVID -19 Pandemic about safety rules and social distancing.
  • PLANTATION PROGRAMME  organised by the department in Bhurbondha PHE and Bhurbondha junior college along with its students.
  • Students Participated in an online webinar on Investors Awareness Programme

Future Plan of the Department

  • As per Sustainable Development Goal, Educate students regarding the adaptation of green practices. 
  • To Launch a Youtube Channel in the name of the Department.
  • To create a START-UP NEST for the students
  • To Launch a Book Bank for financially disadvantaged students.
  • For practical exposure of students, plan to visit Industrial Park. industrial estate etc.
  • Plan to organize seminar and workshops.

Best Practices

  • Conducting FINANCIAL-AWARENESS workshops regularly through departmental Resource-Person collaborating with SEBI.
  • Conducting online INVESTORS-AWARENESS Programme for students collaborating with Ambition Learning Solutions,  a Mumbai-based Company.
  • In pursuance of SDG department is Carrying out cleanliness and plantation drive under Departmental Community Works.
  • Time to time Conducting Entrepreneurship Development programme for students in association with All Assam Small Scale Industries Associations, Guwahati.
  • Conducting a survey on financial Inclusion cum Awareness programme under the Departmental Community Works.
